Kumamoto Castle was a Japanese castle located in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture (Kumamoto, Akuta District, Higo Province) from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period. Also known as “Ginnanjo”.
Hirayama Castle was renovated by Kiyomasa Kato, incorporating a medieval castle, and after the Kato clan changed its name, it was the residence of the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto domain until the end of the Edo period. During the Meiji period, it became a battlefield of the Seinan War. Immediately before the Seinan Rebellion, the buildings of the Honmaru, including the large and small castle towers and palaces, were destroyed by fire.[2] The turrets, castle gates, and walls, including the Uto turret, still exist, and 13 turrets (11 turrets, 1 gate, and 1 fence) still exist. ) has been designated as a national important cultural property. Additionally, the castle ruins have been designated as a national special historic site as the “Kumamoto Castle Ruins.”
